Helping Transform Schools in Ghana into World-class English Learning Centres

News

TEFL UK are delighted to be partnering with Wordplay Africa to provide dedicated English language resources in local communities throughout Ghana.

Teach English in Africa

It is no secret that many young learners across the world have difficulty learning the English language – and for those teaching in Africa, including rapidly modernising nations like Ghana, teachers may find that the English Language is a challenging subject that young learners must overcome if they wish to proceed to the next level of education. For a typical Primary 6 learner in Ghana, their view of English may be either: a continual completion of comprehension questions about particularly dull and uninspiring stories, composing essays on subjects that hold no interest, or learning grammatical rules without any notion on how best to apply them.

Through TEFL UK’s partnership with Worldplay Africa, we are revitalising English language education in local communities. Our objective is that schools can instead offer more engagement through English language in context, provide a ‘real-world’ view of English that will broaden learner horizons, and ensuring key skills in English learned by students are put to efficient future use. For children with English as a Second language, the English learning classroom can become a space that widens their creative abilities, heightens their communicative skills, and enables students to apply English language effectively in everyday life. TEFL UK and Wordplay Africa are helping bring UK-certified English Second Language teachers into classrooms in Ghana. Instructors joining the program will undertake TEFL training and therefore hold international TEFL certification, providing the skills not just to teach English as a foreign language, but signposting best practice for delivering content rich lessons that will engage students and stimulate learning.

Supporting English teaching in Ghana

We’ve made it our goal at TEFL UK to transform the lives of as many people around the world as possible through English language education - and Ghana is no exception! Through our partnership with Wordplay Africa, TEFL UK aims to advance the learning of the English language in schools and further education institutions throughout Ghana. Lisa Davies, Business Development Manager at TEFL UK said of the partnership, ‘learners can look to a future where English communication is a vital part of their skill set. Our aim is to help the young people of Ghana become more competitive in the international job market and open doors to a greater number of future opportunities.’

By partnering with TEFL UK and Wordplay Africa, staff from local Ghanaian schools will join our community of world-class teachers, trained in high-quality British education and the latest and best English-teaching methodologies. ESL teachers will acquire the necessary TEFL and classroom skills which will allow them to deliver structured, engaging content through a range of activities, from: conversations and storytelling, music and poetry, debates and advocacy, as well as writing and digital skills.

TEFL UK and Wordplay Africa share an aligned goal to help Ghanaian teachers become TEFL qualified so they may progress the future of Ghanaian students through effective English language teaching. Helping Ghanaian teachers become TEFL certified ultimately brings more project-based curricula into the classroom with an emphasis on stimulating learner creativity and allowing students the freedom to increase their talk time in English with regular feedback, facilitation and encouragement from teachers.

Lisa Davies added ‘small focused groups in class is something that we are actively encouraging, ensuring no learner is left behind. We strongly believe that every young person can improve their future academic and career prospects through solid English language skills. In addition to this, learners can achieve a boost to their self-esteem, self-confidence, and overall happiness. We will support participating teachers, whether in-person or virtually, to help them deliver their ESOL content with a progressive approach.’
