A teaching job with better hours

Our TEFL teachers find that their new job teaching English is comparatively less time-consuming than in the UK - leaving them lots of downtime for exploring, visiting new areas, and cultural immersion.

Competitive salaries for English teachers

You might look at the reduced hours and panic - how will you afford to live off part-time pay?

However, when in Spain, living expenses are much lower or are partially included, so you may actually find you have more money left over per month!

Depending on which language schools you work for, enjoy a juicy salary of up to €1,500 - €1,600 per month. Some positions even come with home stays or support fees that make things more affordable, too.

TEFL English teaching jobs FAQs

Largely, English teachers and language assistant positions are the same - your main priority is to teach English in Spain to children of all ages. This may be in an international school, a private school, or at a language academy. However, the focus is to assist with foreign language acquisition, in this instance, the English language, in an educational setup. So, whether you find the role listed under teaching assistant, language assistant program teacher, or even TEFL teachers, your role will be the same - help your cohort learn the English language, from a native.

For teaching English abroad, you will need:

To be a native-level English speaker from an eligible country (the UK is fine) or hold a C2 English certificate

Hold a university/college/ bachelor's degree or be enrolled in your second year

Be aged up to 59 by January 1st, 2027 (visa requirement)

Have a clean background check with no criminal record

You don't need to have any Spanish language skills, however, so don't worry if you wouldn't get far without a phrasebook for now!

As with most teaching positions, if you want to teach English in Spain, there is an element of competition as schools try to find the best language assistants/teachers for their schools.

However, there are ways you can set yourself apart from other English teachers if you are serious about the role:

Take a TEFL course to develop your pedagogy and teaching skills - TEFL certification can look very appealing to potential employers

Showcase cultural adaptability, in particular, the Spanish culture, on your CV

Craft a tailored CV and cover letter which explains your experience, teaching philosophy, practical skills, including classroom management techniques, and motivation for working in Spain

Be prepared and assist wherever possible when applying for your visa and throughout the visa process

Teaching English abroad is an exciting opportunity, and we're sure that with our support and your enthusiasm, you'll find your dream job in no time.

When considering the teaching opportunities in Spain, at the outset, English teachers might find it a little overwhelming.

In some cases, international schools require Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a degree. They can be more open to experienced teachers and tend to stick with standard operating hours.

Language schools or private language academies, however, tend to be open to those who want a career teaching English without a degree, a TEFL certification or similar might be enough. Likewise, this type of establishment might be best for English teachers looking to be more flexible with working patterns, as it can offer evening classes.

However, it is important to note that when you are considering routes to teaching English, not all language or international schools are the same, so it's best to check the school details for every position.
