Why August is the best time to teach English in Colombia
• Colombia

Do you dream of South America?
A continent unlike any other, Colombia is home to friendly and welcoming people, awe-inspiring sights, and balmy weather.
So, why wouldn’t you want to find Colombia TEFL jobs so you can earn and explore?
The travel experts at TEFL UK reveal the wonders of coffee-soaked Colombia!

Life-changing events
If you are about to embark on your next adventure to teach English as a foreign language, this vibrant city is home to many hidden gems, but here are a few of our favourites. All of which can be enjoyed in your downtime from your TEFL job in Colombia.
Medellín’s Feria de las Flores (flower festival)
Celebrating Colombian culture and the region’s flower industry, visitors to the flower festival can expect stunning blooms to cover the ‘city of eternal spring’ from balconies to terraces and gardens and far beyond.
A feast of colour and joy, you’ll find ten days of festivities, with over 140 individual events, including:
- A horse fair
- Orchestral festivals
- Classic car parades
- An enormous flower fair
- A silleta parade, complete with up to 80 highly-decorated chivas (open-sided buses)
A world-record-breaking cultural event and one of the largest festivals in Latin America, it’s really not to be missed!
Villa de Leyva Wind and Kite Festival
For flower-free options in August, Colombia also offers another unmissable cultural experience: the Kite festival.
Held at the windiest time of the year, expect to see fierce competitions in a range of categories, impressive acrobatic displays from professional kite flyers, and a range of concerts and folk exhibitions.
Spread across 3 days, this year’s celebration features guests from across the globe for extra insights into kites and kite history.
Whale watching on the Pacific coast
If you are a nature-lover, whale watching should be top of your list!
Once endangered but now recovering thanks to county and worldwide legislation, hard-to-spot but mesmerising humpback whales complete their migratory journey to Colombia’s Pacific coast to breed and raise their calves safely.
Either up close in a boat or from the nearby hotels and beaches, you can see calves embark on their first swims and watch how the cows (female whales) tend to their young, alongside swimming with dolphins or turtles in the quieter moments.
Stunning biodiversity and nature
As one of the most biodiverse countries in the world, you can expect an experience like no other.
While travelling through the country, you can experience everything from the Amazon rainforest and the Andes mountains to the Caribbean and Pacific coastlines and wide expanses of plains!
Plus, while you explore, you can discover unique wildlife from jaguars and sloths to monkeys, macaws, and poisonous frogs.
This means, if you do need to limit travel due to time or budget constraints, you can enjoy contrasting and awe-inspiring sights and sounds without extra stops.
A comfortable climate
As the regions of Colombia differ, so do the average temperatures and the weather you can expect.
Part of the mini dry season, which lasts from July to August, you can expect temperatures to range from around 14 to 31ºC on the highlands and coastal regions respectively – nothing you can’t handle!
It does mean you need to keep a few essentials on hand, such as sun cream and an umbrella, but once you are out and about, the sights and sounds of South America will take your mind off it all.

If I have a TEFL Colombia job, will I have enough time to travel?
