The Essential Visa & Work Permit Guide for Teaching English in Cambodia (2025)

Cambodia

You’ve read about the low cost of living, you know the people are friendly, and you're ready to explore Angkor Wat. But before you book that flight, securing the correct visa and understanding the requirements to legally teach English in Cambodia is the most crucial step.

Cambodia offers one of the most accessible teaching markets in Asia, but proper compliance is essential for a stress-free experience. This guide breaks down the essential qualifications and the necessary visa process for your teaching journey.

1. Teacher Qualifications: What Schools Really Want

Unlike highly regulated countries such as South Korea or Japan, Cambodia has fewer legal barriers to entry. However, to land the best-paying jobs in cities like Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, you need to meet employer expectations.

Do You Need a Degree to Teach in Cambodia?

  • Legal Requirement: Officially, a Bachelor's degree is not a mandatory requirement for securing a work visa or a teaching job in Cambodia. This makes it an incredibly accessible destination for teachers without a university degree.
  • Employer Preference: The highest-paying jobs, particularly at International Schools, do prefer or require a degree (in any field) to maintain their prestige and accreditation standards. For new teachers, a high-quality TEFL certificate is often enough.

The TEFL Certification: Your Most Valuable Asset

  • Mandatory Status: While you can technically find work without one, nearly all reputable language centres and private academies expect applicants to hold at least a 120-hour TEFL or TESOL certification.
  • Why it Matters: Having a certified TEFL demonstrates to employers that you understand classroom management, lesson planning, and teaching methodologies—skills they value far more than generic work experience.

2. Your Visa Roadmap: The E-Class Business Visa

If you plan to teach English in Cambodia for more than 60 days, you should skip the Tourist Visa (T-Class) and start with the E-Class visa.

Entering Cambodia: T-Class vs. E-Class

The E-Class (Ordinary) Visa is the proper starting point for anyone planning to work in Cambodia.

Visa Type: Tourist (T-Class)

  • Purpose: Holiday, short visit
  • Initial Validity: 30 days
  • Extension Status: Can be extended once (total 60 days). Cannot be converted for work.

Visa Type: Ordinary (E-Class)

  • Purpose: Work, seeking employment
  • Initial Validity: 30 days
  • Extension Status: Can be extended indefinitely once you secure a job.

Most teachers choose to purchase the E-Class visa upon arrival at Phnom Penh or Siem Reap International Airport.

Converting the E-Class to Long-Term Work Status

Once you have secured a job, your initial 30-day E-Class visa can be extended into a long-term EB (Business) Visa through a local agent or with your school’s HR department. You can choose from:

  • 3-Month EB Visa (Good while settling in or on a short contract)
  • 6-Month or 12-Month EB Visa (Ideal for long-term teaching contracts)

The 12-month EB extension is what you need for a stable teaching career and requires you to have a valid Work Permit (see below).

3. The Mandatory Work Permit (Your Legal Right to Teach)

To work legally in Cambodia, foreign nationals must obtain a Work Permit from the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training (MLVT). While enforcement was historically lax, the government is now cracking down, making compliance critical.

Your employer should assist, but you should be prepared with these documents:

  1. Valid EB Visa (or proof of application).
  2. Valid Passport.
  3. Recent passport-sized photos.
  4. Medical/Health Check Certificate (often done locally).
  5. Letter of Employment and supporting documentation from your school.

A Smart Path to Employment

Cambodia is uniquely accommodating for new teachers, but the smartest approach is to arrive with the E-Class visa and secure a reputable job that will process your EB extension and Work Permit for you. This ensures you remain compliant and can focus on the rewarding experience of teaching in the "Kingdom of Wonder."
